Lively Ledeberg

Since June 2010, Domus Mundi has been co-operating in the urban renewal project ‘Ledeberg leeft!’ (‘Lively Ledeberg’). With this rejuvenation cure, the city of Ghent wants to make the most of the trumps, and wants to wipe out the most important flaws, of its Ledeberg district. In short, it wants to show that Ledeberg is a lively – and lovely – neighbourhood.

Ledeberg is a popular, sparkling and open-hearted place that has its own specific problems. Lots of people live together in a maze of densely built streets. There is little open space and greenery. Moreover, lots of houses are poorly equipped, and quite some people live in miserable conditions. At the same time, Ledeberg possesses trumps that often get off the ground too little: it has a lot of facilities, a marvellous situation, a rich cultural life, etc. The urban renewal project must make the neighbourhood more liveable by playing those qualities.

The city focuses on six objectives: more and more beautiful greenery, a better housing quality, more fluent and safer traffic, the renovation of the district’s entries, more and more active public services, and more meeting places.

Domus Mundi is involved in the housing quality improvement part. Every landlord or occupant who wants to renovate his or her house in Ledeberg in a sustainable way, and who is considered for the renovation allowance ‘Ledeberg leeft!’, can count on Domus Mundi for help, advice and assistance during the whole building process. Domus Mundi gives technical support, composes the building team, and coordinates the renovation from the beginning to the end.

Thereby, building in a sustainable way is made possible for the moderate-income inhabitants of Ledeberg, for whom this project and accompanying allowance is a unique opportunity
